Volkswagen is a German automobile manufacturer, that was founded in 1937. They are one of the largest automakers in the world by sales. The average annual repair and maintenance cost for a Volkswagen is $676, which is slightly above average for vehicles in its class. Owners can expect an average of 0.5 visits to a repair shop per year and an 11% probability of any given repair being severe according to RepairPal.com.

Common Complaints

Even though Volkswagen vehicles are considered very reliable, they do have a number of common complaints. Whereas most vehicle manufacturers seem to have more specific problems with certain components, Volkswagen (VW) cars have more model specific complaints.

The top two most severe complaints from VW owners are oil sludge resulting in engine failure and ABS module failure. The average costs to repair these issues are $2,800 and $2,300, respectively.

The VW Jetta, one of Volkswagen’s best selling vehicles, has complaints of clutch failure and automatic transmission failure. The cost to repair can be as much as $1,900 and can happen as early as 13,000 miles. Passat owners mostly complain of oil sludge resulting in engine failure.

VW’s Tiguan has common complaints about timing chain tensioner defects, which can result in engine damage. Consumers can expect at least 90,000 miles out of their vehicle before this becomes a problem, but the cost to repair can be as much as $3,500.

The Beetle, perhaps VW’s most iconic vehicle, tends to have transmission problems after 80,000 miles. Depending on the issue, costs to repair can range anywhere from $3,500 to $5,500.

Volkswagen Manufacturer’s Warranty

VW goes above and beyond when it comes to backing their vehicles. Therefore, all new Volkswagen vehicles come with a 6 year or 72,000 mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Except for some limited coverage components, the VW New Vehicle Limited Warranty offers protection for any defect in the manufacturer’s material or workmanship.

Exclusions to this bumper-to-bumper protection include the following items: battery, brake pads, bulbs, paint, wheel alignment and tire balance, wiper blades, mechanical adjustments, and wear and tear.

Batteries come with protection for 3 years or 36,000 miles. The brake pads and wiper blades on every new VW car are covered for 1 year or 12,000 miles. The halogen bulbs and paint are covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles. Certain mechanical adjustments not associated with a defect in the manufacturer’s material or workmanship are covered for up to 1 year or 12,000 miles. This includes things like adjusting the angle of the halogen lights.

Every new VW vehicle also comes with a tire warranty. However, the tires warranty is through the tire manufacturer, not Volkswagen. Consumers should refer to their warranty manual for more information.

Like most other manufacturer warranties, the Volkswagen new vehicle warranties will be honored by any authorized VW dealer in the US. Therefore, all repairs under the limited warranty are free of charge. All warranted parts that are found to be defective will be replaced by a new or remanufactured Genuine Volkswagen Part. Volkswagen knows that sometimes it’s difficult to get to an authorized dealer. Therefore, if a consumer need emergency repairs performed by a non-VW service facility, they can submit for reimbursement. In this case, the repair work must be necessary and properly performed.

Vehicle Service Contracts

Investing in a Vehicle Service Contract (VSC) for after your manufacturer’s warranty has expired can have a number of benefits. The most obvious benefit is the peace-of-mind you’ll have. In the case that something goes wrong with your vehicle, you can easily have it repaired without hurting your budget. Peace of mind also comes from knowing that you’ll have 24/7 Roadside Assistance. Because no matter where you’re driving, you’ll be able to get the assistance you need.

A VSC can help you maintain and even increase the value of your vehicle. It can help you afford the repairs your vehicle will inevitably require over time. Because they are fully transferable, your vehicle’s next owner can enjoy the same level of protection that you’ve enjoyed. Not to mention, an active warranty on a vehicle can help you sell. This is because potential buyers know that you’ve kept up with important maintenance milestones, in order to maintain your warranty.
